WolfQuest Returns to Yellowstone: Slough Creek

WolfQuest Returns to Yellowstone: Slough Creek

So we’ve come back to Slough Creek for
more on the ground investigation and research for the new map– the new
expanded map – of the Slough Creek area for WolfQuest: Anniversary Edition.
Behind me, you can see Little Butte which is where you spawn in the old game…
and we’re not going up there today. We went up there last time –spectacular
views of the whole meadow! But this time we’re going to be heading up to valley,
up Slough Creek watershed and looking for some new stuff. That’s going to be …not in
the old game …but in the new expanded map in the new game. The whole place is much
greener than it was when we were here before. Last time our visit was in late
September when everything is really browned up. Now it’s late August and it’s
been a very wet summer so this is actually a much greener environment than
it would normally be at this time of year. But that’s helpful for us because
it looks closer to what looks like in the springtime when wolves are raising
their pups. I’m not too happy about this grass! It is so dense and so tall. Tall
grass like this is tough for computers to render and even if your computer can
render it it’s pretty annoying to have to run through as a wolf. One of the new
animals that you’ll see in Slough Creek is beavers. And here is a beaver lodge. This is fresh mud. The
beavers bring up mud in their little hands and pat it down and stuff… And so this is
still damp… so I think they’re still living here. And if you look down in
there you can actually see the underwater entrance that they’ve built
to get into their lodge. As we hike back at the end of the day we saw several
beaver swimming around just outside their lodge. Beavers are going to be a fun addition to Slough Creek and Anniversary Edition.
They’re not a big food source for wolves in Yellowstone. In fact, it is not even
really positively known that wolves even eat beavers in Yellowstone but they do
in northern Minnesota – that’s very well documented – so it is plausible …and they won’t be a big food source but it’ll be a different hunting
challenge. We’re here to see the place again with our own eyes to take hundreds
of photographs that we can use as reference as we’re working on the 3d
environment of Slough Creek. We’re also meeting with one of our science advisor
is Dr. Dan Stahler who’s a wolf biologist here in Yellowstone
and is going to answer lots and lots of our questions about wolves and
especially a wolf pups. So we’re heading up into Aspen Heights. We did place a
den there in the game but today I’m more interested in what’s just on the other
side of that ridge there …so let’s go see. And here it is! It’s a lake! Who knew there was a lake
back here just over the slope from Aspen Heights den? So this is McBride Lake. A
little jewel here…set amongst the granite rocks above and around Slough Creek. It’s also coincidentally at about
2,000 meters elevation. Which I can tell on my little uh… altimeter app, on
my phone. And what’s interesting about that is that wolves, when they’re looking
for a place to make their den in the winter, they look for sites that are
between about 2,000 meters and 2300 meters elevation. so we’re going to head
up into the hills here above McBride Lake and see if we can find any good den
sites. So right here on the shores of McBride Lake, we have this big old rock
and a little crevice underneath. Not a lot of room right there now but it’s a dirt
floor and a wolf could easily dig it out and use this as a starting point for a
nice cozy den. Another thing that makes a good den location is access to water. So
Lake McBride is an appealing location but there are a lot of little creeks
flowing down the slopes into Slough Creek in the springtime. So, plenty of
opportunities! What else do wolves look for it in a den
site? For one thing, they want a nice, sunny. south-facing slope. When the pups are born,
in mid April, it’s really still winter up here in Yellowstone so they want to
catch as much of that warm spring sunshine as they can, to melt the snow
and give the pups a warm place to hang out in the first weeks of life. On slopes
like, this wolves often look for old dens abandoned by other animals like foxes
and coyotes . They use these as a starting point and dig them ou –enlarge them– to
make them big enough for their own pups. And, of course, if they’ve already got a
nice cozy den established on a nice south-facing slope, they’ll often return
to that, year after year. Some people wonder why the logs in the game aren’t
obstacles. You can just go right through them. But do you really want to be doing
this when you’re chasing an elk at 30 miles an hour? Another popular den site is under the
spreading roots of an old tree. This one is not a den yet… but you can see
the potential. If you’re wolf, you might look for a nice den site here under a jumble
of rock somewhere. This is pretty rough! But uh…there might be a good spot up here ,if you look hard. So we’re
putting on all these types of dens in the Slough Creek map.Though some digging may be required. Of course everyone also wants to go inside their den. That gets
a little tricky but… but we’ll see. So there’s many different kinds of
places that a wolf might find or make for a den site. But the important thing
to remember is that they only live in their den for about two months, while the
pups are very young, and then they head out! They abandon the den and might journey to a rendezvous site up in the highlands. They might just slowly expand their
territory. But they’re basically, at that point, following the elk herds. They don’t
need the den anymore because as Dave Mech says, the wolf’s body is its
shelter. And, after two months, the pups are big enough and strong enough to move with the pack as it searches for prey. And now we come to the creek again…Slough Creek again.. and all new creek crossings. So there’ll be lots of new places to check
out but the wise wolf crosses first, without their pups, to make sure it’s not
too deep. Okay! Bring the pups! There’s an old bison
bull dozing there across the creek… and we have to get that-away to get back to
the main trail …to head back to the trailhead. And you’re supposed to keep
your distance from bison bulls because they’ve got an Attitude. So, we’re gonna
have to sneak around, keep our distance, keep as far away as we can. If we disturb him… if we piss him off… I don’t know… the mobile version of WolfQuest may
never be finished… I don’t think he cares about us. Dude,
have some dignity! And we’ve made it to Second Meadow! A few miles upstream from First Meadow (the part of Slough Creek that we all know and love from the game). You
know, I love the Amethyst map …and the Lamar Valley, but there’s just
something about Slough Creek! It’s ..it’s still got that feeling of Yellowstone
vastness but because the creek cuts through the whole long valley, it just
gives it this intimacy that is really special. And we’re really excited to
bring a bigger and better version of Slough Creek to the game. So today we’ve
returned to Slough Creek, hiked across First Meadow up to Lake McBride, looked
around the hills above that for possible wolf den sites. Crossed the creek again…and we’ve got the Second Meadow of Slough Creek. So, we’ve had a fabulous day
hiking here and learned a lot about what the place looks like. But we still – even
after this full day here– we’ve only seen… maybe… not even a quarter of the map – of the new Slough Creek map in WolfQuest: Anniversary Edition. So there’s lots more that will be in the game that we haven’t even seen here. And now we have
to head back to the trailhead, head back to work. and make that map as close as we can to be as beautiful as the real place. All right, well that hike was two months
ago now. So do you want to see how the Slough Creek map has come along? Still a work in progress but it’s coming along!

  1. AMAZING SLOUGH CREEK U DON'T NEED TO WORK ON IT JUST MAKE ALL THE ANIMALS SPAWN AND LET US PLAY ON IT FOR A FREE TRIAL(without the puppies tho plzzzz I really mean it) then u can keep working on it for better stuff and all these things. Just only a trial and next vid show us how u gonna make the toads, pups, bison and pronghorns plz take ur time c= =3

  2. Omg, this is so exciting!! I think Slough Creek has the potential to be even more fun than Amethyst, what with the pups and all.
I would absolutely LOVE if we actually had to dig out our dens, as you mentioned. Any way to make each step more involved would be much appreciated by me, and others as well I think. Of course, going inside the den as well would be a huge bonus, as we could do some in den pup raising as well in their more early stages. Though, I totally understand that it might be too difficult a technical challenge.

  3. Im 10 hours late….i just got this notification, im sad :’)
Will we be able to have an actual pack this time around or will it just be, raising the pups then game over, like in 2.7?
Maybe have an option of raising a pack or starting again with more pups as if they didn’t survive throughout the time they grew?

  4. I would love to be able to enter the den, with the pups and stuff. I think it'd be interesting for rp and gameplay! Even just having to dig out the den before the pups are born would be cool!

  5. Uploaded on my birthday! It's kind of cold and yucky where we're at right now, so it was a nice treat to see a video of the great outdoors, especially since it relates to my favorite game :^)

  6. I like the WolfQuest 2.5 music when Dave crossed the river and the hunting music when he walked by the lazy bison and the journey music when we got good views and omg I cant wait for the slough creek map!!! It looks so cool!

  7. awesome! could you post a video of running around the map in slough creek as a wolf showing us the progression so far?

  8. You know how paranoid I am crossing with pups? I feed one to full health, bring them across frantically, then wait for my mate to bring them across, and feed them all. Now they're are literally bundles of fluffy joy, I'm going to be devastated when I lose one.

  9. I can't wait. WolfQuest will always be in my top ten favourite apps list. Can't wait for the Slough Creek and Mobile one.

Edit:If There is a mobile one that is.

  10. you did so good! this is beautiful. when you showed your rendering of slough creek i almost thought you were still there!

  11. Hey this quest tell your team that thank you for working so hard on the game also can you please add every new animal you see please please please please please 🙏

  12. Hi I’m here for some top tips aka facts my dad told me and some suggestions on how I think the game should work and some glitches I found lol:

1: wolf sents are stronger when they mark in rain or under trees and plants and they last longer

2: I think it would be an idea to have the wolf pups when there first born not able to move from the den like in the start of shelter 2, I think it would bring you closer to the pups and stuff???

3: runts are less likely to survive in litters becuase the stronger siblings will get food before them giving them a low chance of survival.

4: in wolf quest 2 there were birds and stuff that were at the dens, that’s unrealistic because they would one be scared or 2 the wolfs would kill them

5: just another suggestion for the pups is that they maybe sleep a lot? Because I don’t know if this is a fact but I imagine them to be very playful and get realy tired.

    On to glitches:

The one glitch I’ve seen is I was hunting elk and I saw a cow elk, it wasent a calf and it said it was an adult elk and it was tall but it had the health of an elk calf (idk if this is a feature in the game on purpose if it is correct me lol)

That’s it realy lol I hope maybe this helps with the game!

  13. Can you add in where you can make like your own pack or like when you find other dispersal wolves you can add them into your pack I think that'd be cool lol

  14. Thank you for working so hard to make this game the best it can be. I love the attention to detail and how the maps resemble the real Yellowstone. Can't wait to play the new map. Sounds like finding a den will be much more intuitive.

  15. I saw that and I don’t think I even blinked until the vid ended, I can’t wait how this will look, I’m so excited, there’s so many different colours it’s amazing, and my wolves Buzzard and Blizzard are really looking forward to this too, so they can have a family of their own!

  16. It might also be cool to be able to see other pairs of wolves possibly looking for a den or passing by, or even, if u have and are super nosy, see their pups, u could kill them, or fight the other pairs of wolves in the area, they could be as bigger enough of a threat as we are to them!

  17. When you said “okay bring the pups!” That really got me honestly. That’s just basically me in WQ 2.7 letting my mate do all the work.

  18. xD that bison was like maaan this sun feels gooodd xD XD
though u say its a work in progress it still looks bootifule <3 yall r Amazing for never giving up on this game thank u 😀 <3

  19. One thing I love about this video is the music changes in the background, for example, when you saw the bison it turned into predator music.
I’m also exited for Slough Creek to be out! Even if it takes a year, I’ll still watch it’s progress in the WolfQuest channel! Also, the pups are going to be so cute!

  20. Personally I'd love areas where I need to jump over logs, the elk needing to as well. Maybe the ability to turn that on and off for different people. But I think it would add a new level of immersion into the game. Wolves would have trouble hunting elk in an area heavy with brush and logs too, so I think it would be a great addition to consider. Running straight through logs was something I was somewhat disappointed with haha, I understand where the mechanics though would likely be more difficult, especially when considering NPCs like elk, fox and rabbits having to maneuver through them.

  21. I got an idea for a feature I'd love to see and i think wouldn't be hard to add! Can you make an option to randomize a wolf in the create wolf panel? I'd love to have that.

  22. This is amazing! I've been a WolfQuest fan for 5 years, as long as i can remember. I've always wanted the game back then but was too shy to ask anyone to, and I didn't have my own money because I was too young, but this year i bought the original WolfQuest and got the Anniversary version for free! I am happy a game like this exists, it's really entertaining and you get to learn a lot about nature. The graphics are also very well done and look very realistic! All wolf and nature lovers should give it a try 🙂 I already know they'll love it. Cheers to the developer/s and really excited for more features!

  23. 6:19 killed me, lol. *DRAMATIC IN GAME MUSIC I GREW UP ON WHEN YOU'RE CROSSING A RIVER…* "Okay, bring the pups."
And oh the end of the video… It's breathtaking… Slough Creek is coming along gorgeously guys, just like the real footage you showed. ;3; I love it, thank you, the entire team, for this special treat that constantly grows. As an old fan who's almost been playing for a decade now, you all have my respect and my heart for video games, and animals. ;3; I love and appreciate you guys for your hard work. <3

  24. What if you add a mechanic where you automatically step over the logs as you run? Like, it wouldn’t affect anything game wise, it would just make it look more natural.

  25. YES I GOT WOLF QUEST THREE! on my g-ma's computer. it is giving me some errors though….😕 it's saying like try re-opening and closing the page. And it froze and said try opening and errors and all of those but I think I can get past it😀

  26. He said "Bring the pups" 😂The view is amazing just makes you want to run all around and even play In the river and dig dens everywhere and explore. Gahh I love this ❤️🙌

  27. WHOA THAT ENDING OMG I CANT WAIT UNTIL IT COMES OUT ON MY LAPTOP… OH AND ON MY IPAD ASWELL (my laptop keeps breaking so its in the shop every 3 months *maybe even less*)

  28. I hope their going to add the same food and health meter as they have in Wolf Quest 3 for the pups as well so they don't crave food as much as they do in Wolf Quest 2.7.3. I know they need a lot of food to eat but I hope that they don't crave in too much where you need to give them food 2047.

  30. Cool recamendation…. Do you guys think you could add the feature and option to actually go INSIDE the dens?? Please respond with your thought -Cassidy

  31. I’ve already gotten to the point where I need a den, IM SO EXCITED, that looks sooo good, I can’t wait to have pups.

  32. Hey Wolfquest! I was watching someone on YouTube but suddenly, weird things showed up. They couldn't do anything but look at the map and "avatar". The avatar had 6 paws with red markings or full black. Another thing was: She had a thing saying "pack rally 3+" . After showing and explaining she went to the map.
It has most of the things that may be in slough creek (My den, My pups, In-law, To towerfall, and etc). After showing this, she opened up the pack info.
It said: Puppynamepup for 6 sections or whatever. Then it explained the bio which was some kind on language. I believe that this is a ULTIMATE glitch that needs to be fixed.

  33. Question. Will there be a chance that the pups will grow up or is that a suggestion? That would be amazing if the pups grew up by raising them and then them choosing different packs, or staying with the family. You guys put so much work and effort into making everything look so beautiful and alike just like yellow stone. It is phenomenal to see how much of this game has grown from back then. I’m excited about this amazing game evolving into an astonishing game. Good work to all of you.

  34. I can see that you people are planning on adding digging to the game! That sounds so good!
Plus the areas u visited are absolutely beautiful!

  35. When will this be available to tablet? Its flipping saying in 2018 update the mobile one to 3.0 please im dieing EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

  36. I know I'm late but I was wondering when multiplayer will be available? I've been waiting a while and all I'd like to know is when it might be possible for it to come into the game?

  37. I love these because i get to recognize areas I've seen in the game and see them irl and realize just exactly how beautiful yellowstone is

  38. what if we had to dig ourself to make our den
and instead of playing when they are 6weeks we can play when there first born and different difficulty levels add to if foxes scratch into the holes and try to pull them out eagles piecing there head in stranger wolves stealing along with coyotes and like they stay at the tiny stage for 2 dynamic cycles on the game on average mode 3 on the hard mode 1 and a half on the easiest mode

    just an idea 🤷‍♀️

  39. Just a suggestion that the pups grow up they can stay or leave start pack of their own and make them playable characters like if people want to save them and they can have their own lives like people could play the puppies but as adults . We should get a roll the dice type thing if they stay or leave. If they leave and they go into other packs to start of their own and we(parent) of the puppy that left ran into them in and their pack but they're more hostile or more accepting I feel like that will just give us a little bit more edge of realism but again it just a suggestion

I love the hard-working animations and crew members and the game in general. I appreciate all the hard work that you guys are putting into this to make us the game players feel special.
