Marvel and Sony Make Nice on Spider-Man – Fox News

Just one month ago, it seemed that Marvel Studios had lost Spider-Man for good. Negotiations between Disney and Sony Pictures fizzled, meaning Marvel and Kevin Feige would no longer be incorporating Spidey into his ever-expanding cinematic universe But it appears the two companies, with all the money in the world on the line, have been able to work it out after all: Marvel Studios will produce another Tom Holland–led Spider-Man film for Sony, in exchange for being allowed to borrow the character for another Marvel-verse movie in the future  According to the Hollywood Reporter, the new Homecoming film will premiere on July 16, 2021, with the possibility of more collaborations to come in the future As Feige told THR, “I am thrilled that Spidey’s journey in the MCU will continue, and I and all of us at Marvel Studios are very excited that we get to keep working on it Spider-Man is a powerful icon and hero whose story crosses all ages and audiences around the globe He also happens to be the only hero with the superpower to cross cinematic universes, so as Sony continues to develop their own Spidey-verse you never know what surprises the future might hold ” The news late this summer that Marvel and Feige might no longer be making Spider-Man movies panicked a vocal contingent of fans who threatened to boycott Sony in protest Marvel diehards insist that Sony’s own Spidey films—which have included Sam Raimi’s trilogy, Marc Webb’s now defunct Andrew Garfield–starring franchise, and last year’s Into the Spider-Verse and Venom—have paled in comparison to Feige’s accomplishments with the character (In fairness, Sony’s done a way better job than a lot of these fans give them credit for ) Either way, these fans will likely cheer the news. Another happy camper? Tom Holland, who has already reacted to this happy occasion on Instagram His celebratory post? A triumphant clip of Leonardo DiCaprio from The Wolf of Wall Street  The news of Marvel and Sony’s reconciliation might catch some by surprise, but as THR notes, there were ultimately plenty of reasons for both sides of this deal to come back to the table In short: all of those staggering box office runs and merchandising opportunities were simply too precious to waste And besides, nothing warms the heart like two media giants working things out.More Great Stories from Vanity Fair — Our cover story: Lupita Nyong’o on Us, Black Panther, and much more— Five appalling stories from the set of The Wizard of Oz— Hugh Grant’s very English comeback— How’s Joker?
